Every Citizens Advice Bureau is a registered charity and volunteers are our lifeblood.

By joining us you will become part of a well-established, growing, advice network which really values its 26,000 volunteers.  All kinds of people have the skills we need and no specific qualifications are required before you start.  Training and support are available every step of the way.  All we ask is that you work well in a team and enjoy helping others.

Peter joined as an adviser after a 22 year career in the Civil Service:  "I volunteer three days a week in one bureau and two days in another as an adviser.  I had a lot of experience working with Social Secruity benefits and I wanted to continue helping people.  I get a lot of satisfaction when people succeed in getting things.  I always recommend volunteering with CAB to other people."

Former volunteer adviser Sadia says:

"I first went to the CAB to get some advice myself, saw a volunteer recruitment poster and thought I'd like to do for others what the adviser had done for me.  The basic training was a good learning experience and I really enjoy helping people.  In three years, I've gone from client to volunteer adviser and now my children are both at school I work full time as a paid Senior Support Worker.  I've even encouraged several clients to become volunteers by sharing my experiences with them."

CAB training helps you develop the professional skills you need to give advice.

Barbara has volunteered as a CAB administrator for seven years:

"After I retired, I needed something to do and initially trained and worked as an adviser.  I now volunteer for six hours a week doing general office administration.  There is an enormous variety of queries and people and I feel I have learned more about life whilst at the CAB than I did during my whole working life before."

Getting involved - what's in it for you?
  • Use your existing skills and develop new ones.

  • Opportunity to develop your communication skills.  We particularly welcome speakers of community languages as volunteers.

  • Chance to give as much of your time as you want to help others.

  • Develop real, practical life skills and experience in an office environment.

  • Join a well respected advice network - if your circumstances change you can move from one bureau to another.

  • Meet new people in your local community.

  • Play a part in improving national and local policies - we use our clients' experiences to campaign for change.

  • Flexibility to fit your volunteering commitment with the rest of your home and working life.
